NEW PORT ON THE GLOBAL HORIZON : KRISHNAPATNAM PORT



  • Krishnapatnam Port is situated in Potti Sriramulu Nellore District.
  • On the left bank of Upputeru River and well connected with the National Highway 5 and also a railway line at a distance of 21 KMs.
  • Located at :-
    • North :- Lat. 14° 18.75’ N, Long. 80° 08.50’ E
    • South :- Lat. 14° 12’ N, Long. 80° 07.2’ E to 10 fathoms of water
    • East :- A line drawn from the Eastern extremities of the North and South Limits.
    • West :- Lat. 14° 18.75’ N, Long. 80° 08.5’ E to northern head of the Khandaleru back waters

  • The port is proposed to develop as per Master Plan in the land. An extent of Ac.5,800 and an extent of Ac.2978.55 was handed over to M/s KPCL
  • Conservancy powers vested with Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited.
  • This is the first Greenfield Port privatized by the Government of AP and licenced to M/s. Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited on January 4, 1997 to develop into Deep Water Port on BOST terms.
  • Krishnapatnam port has a total cargo potential to handle 25 MTS per annum in the short term and over 100 MTS per annum in the long term.
  • In an historic event, for the first time in India, an agreement was signed among the consortium comprising of one private party and three Government agencies for construction of 114 kms. Rail link to the hinterland.
  • A 114-km long Broad Gauge railway line work at a cost of Rs.758 Crores connecting to Krishnapatnam Port is in progress and the entire project is programmed to be completed by Mid, 2014.
  • A 21-km long four lane road with 6-lane ROW is laid parallel to the railway line at a cost of Rs.147 crores from NH-5 to the Krishnapatnam Port.


THE PRESENT STATUS:



  • Fully mechanized bulk material handling system for coal and iron ore
  • Internal Railway System of 18.5 km with a side arm charger, a twin wagon tippler for iron ore and mechanized wagon loading system for coal.
  • 38 million cum. of capital dredging for handling 1,05,000 DWT ships.
  • In Phase I, 4 Berths completed by March, 2009. Iron ore – 2 Berths, Coal – 1 Berth, General Cargo – 1 Berth.
  • Depth available is 16.50 Mts.
  • The cargo handling capacity of the port is 20 Million Tons.
  • Commercial operations are commenced from 20-3-2009.
  • 15.91Million Tons cargo was handled during 2010-11 and 13.13 Million Tons in the year 2011-12 (upto 01/2012).


ACTIVITIES IN PHASE-II:



  • 4 More berths constructed for General cargo and are in operation.
  • 3 More berths are under construction stage
  • Dedicated berths for handling coal for Power Plants like UMPP, APGENCO and Private Power Plants.
  • Container berth with handling equipment.
  • Additional General Cargo Berths for augmenting handling of agri products and fertilizers.
  • A heavy lifts berth with design strength of 12 T/m2 for handling over dimensional Cargo.
  • Mechanized system for handling fertilizer cargo.
